Your job is to trace every single line exactly once, in one continuous stroke, without lifting your finger and without retracing a line you have already drawn. Some versions let you start anywhere, others mark a fixed starting point. Either way, the challenge is the same: find the one path through the whole shape that uses every connection exactly once.

The one rule that tells you if a puzzle is even solvable
Here is the part almost nobody tells you, and it will save you a huge amount of wasted effort. Before you even start dragging your finger around, look at how many lines meet at each dot. Puzzle designers call this the "degree" of a dot, which just means the number of lines touching it.
If a dot has an odd number of lines coming out of it, it can only ever be a starting point or an ending point in your stroke, never something you pass through in the middle. A solvable one stroke puzzle can have at most two odd dots. If it has zero odd dots, you can start anywhere and you will always end up back where you began. If it has exactly two odd dots, you must start on one of them and finish on the other.
You do not need to count out loud every time, but training your eye to spot the odd dots first, before you commit to a starting point, is the single biggest time-saver in this entire game. Most well-designed puzzles are built around this rule, so once you see it, the shape almost solves itself.
If you glance at a puzzle and count more than two dots with an odd number of connections, something about your reading of the shape is off, or the level wants you to find the one path that still works despite looking messy. Recount before you assume it is unsolvable.
Start from the dead ends, not the middle
New players almost always start from whichever dot is closest to their thumb. Better players start by scanning the whole shape for corners and dots with only one or two connections. Those tight spots have the fewest options, so they are the most likely places you will get trapped later if you leave them for last.
Work outward from the tightest corner of the puzzle rather than the open, busy middle. The middle of the shape usually has more paths available, so it is more forgiving if you save it for later. The edges and corners are where wrong decisions get punished.
Think one junction ahead, not one line ahead
The mistake that causes most resets is treating each line as an isolated decision. You draw a line because it is available, not because you have thought about where it leaves you. Instead, before you draw a line into a busy dot, glance at what other lines meet there and whether your path will still be able to escape after you arrive.
A simple way to build this habit: every time you approach a dot with three or more connections, pause for half a second and ask "if I enter here, which lines are still free for me to leave on?" If the answer is "none that make sense," back up mentally before you commit with your finger.
Save the loops for last
Many one stroke puzzles include small loops or triangles hanging off the main shape. It is tempting to knock these out first because they look self-contained. Do the opposite. A loop only has one way in and one way out along the main path, so if you burn that connection early, you may cut yourself off from reaching the rest of the puzzle later.
Treat loops and small side-shapes as detours you take on your way past, not destinations you rush toward.
Use your finger like a pencil, not a mouse
On touchscreens specifically, a lot of "failed" attempts are not logic errors at all, they are just messy tracing. If your finger drifts near a dot you did not intend to touch, some games will register that as a wrong move even though your plan was correct. Slow your hand down through the busy sections, especially where several lines converge on one dot, and speed up through the long open stretches where there is only one direction to go.
Practice progression: how to actually get better, not just luckier
- Level 1-10: Focus purely on spotting odd-degree dots before you start. Do not worry about speed yet.
- Level 10-30: Start planning two junctions ahead instead of one. This is where most players plateau, and pushing through it is what separates casual players from people who clear entire packs in one sitting.
- Level 30+: The puzzles start combining loops, crossing lines, and multiple odd dots. At this stage, the fastest players are the ones scanning the whole board for a few seconds before touching it at all, not the ones moving their finger the fastest.
A good benchmark: if you are resetting a level more than three times, stop and recount the odd-degree dots. Nine times out of ten, you picked the wrong starting point rather than making a wrong move partway through.
